 DIY Flower Projects

Floral Hair Pins

It might not be the 60s, but flower power seems to have struck again with a vengeance, at least in the fashion world. A lot of brides have taken to the tradition, and if they don’t want to replace the veil, bridesmaids and the maid of honor can often be seen wearing the blossoms. Fake flowers can look nice, but often lack the freshness and appeal of real flowers. To take advantage of this blossoming trend, Martha Stewart recommends storing away the flowers in a refrigerator prior to the day you will wear them. Stewart also recommends using a U-shaped hairpin for larger flowers and a chignon for small clusters. There are many flowers that look beautiful in hair, but some of the ones that work best are roses, orchids, lilies, baby’s breath, and stephanotis.

Floral Crowns:

This project requires a bit more time and effort than the previous one, but you may find that it pays off in the end….Floral crowns can be designed for communions, weddings, other special events, or just for days when you feel like being super pretty. Floral hair crowns can use either faux or real flowers. Firstly, make sure you have all the required materials (floral wire, pliers, floral tape, and flowers). Form a halo with the wire the wire, tripling it for a stronger, more secure structure. Using pliers, cut four inches of wire and wrap this around the buds, tying the blossom in to the circle tightly. Continue using the four inch sections to the rest of your flowers in, and make sure the flowers aren’t spaced too far apart.  Now that it is Autumn, you even may like incorporating leaves or berries into your crown.

Make your own Flower Pot:

Take an old, dirty flower pot that you’ve been hoarding in your back yard and transform it into a functional work of art! This is a very easy project that requires few materials. All you’ll need is spray paint and stencils! You can make your own stencils out of cut cardboard. Whether you spray on flowers or something completely unrelated, ensure that the pot you’re working with is thoroughly cleaned out before you begin.
